Virologist and Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, UQAM
Benoit Barbeau received his Ph.D. in molecular biology from the Université de Montréal on the study of a particular type of leukemia. He then continued his post-doctoral studies in the team of Dr. Michel J Tremblay (CRCHUL, Ste-Foy) and became interested in HIV-1. Since the beginning of his career as an independent researcher and a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montréal, his research interests have focused on human retroviruses, such as HIV and human endogenous retroviruses. The study of this last class of inactive viruses revealed their involvement in the formation of the human placenta and their association with various obstetric disorders, such as preeclampsia. As of last year, his team has been working on SARS-CoV-2 entry inhibitors and on a platform to evaluate the performance of different technologies and compounds for their antiviral activity on contaminated surfaces.
